Creative Ways to Display What Matters Most

Over the years in our shop, we’ve had the privilege of helping people preserve some truly meaningful pieces. Sometimes it’s a wedding invitation, sometimes a military medal set, and sometimes it’s a simple photograph that carries a lifetime of memories.

One thing we’ve learned is that how something is displayed can completely change how it’s experienced. Traditional framing works beautifully for artwork and photographs, but every now and then a piece comes through our doors that needs something a little more creative.

That’s where shadow boxes and unique custom framing projects come in. Both approaches can transform meaningful items into displays that feel personal, intentional, and built to last.

If you’ve ever wondered which option might work best, here’s how we usually help clients think through the decision.

What Is a Shadow Box?

A shadow box is essentially a frame with extra depth between the glass and the backing. That extra space allows us to display three-dimensional objects instead of just flat artwork.

We often suggest shadow boxes when clients bring in items like

  • Medals and awards

  • Travel souvenirs

  • Baby keepsakes

  • Wedding mementos

  • Sports memorabilia

  • Military memorabilia

A Grandmother once brought in a collection of napkins collected by her grandson. They had encouraging messages hand written on them and lovingly placed in his school lunch box by his Step-Dad every day.  Instead of leaving them in a drawer, we arranged them in a shadow box. It ended up becoming one of the most meaningful pieces in their home, even swaying a judge in a custody battle.

Because of the depth, shadow boxes naturally create a layered, almost museum-style display that really draws the eye.

Why People Love Shadow Boxes

There’s something special about turning memories into something you can see every day.

Protection for meaningful items

We always remind clients that framing isn’t just about appearance. A properly built shadow box protects delicate keepsakes from dust, damage, and handling.

Added visual depth

Instead of everything sitting flat, the objects create layers and dimension. It gives the display a sense of life and movement.

A personal story on the wall

Every shadow box we design ends up telling a story. Sometimes it’s a career milestone, a family memory, or a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Many of our clients tell us their shadow box ends up being the most talked-about piece in the room.

Many of our clients tell us their shadow box ends up being the most talked-about piece in the room. Custom framing can go far beyond the standard frame you might find in a store. In our shop, this is where creativity really comes into play.

A unique framing project might involve:

  • Mixing frame styles

  • Layered mats and textures

  • Oversized statement frames

  • Framing unexpected objects

  • Designing gallery walls

One of our favorite projects involved framing a collectable printed vinyl Madonna album.  We paired it with a rosary and lace, things she is known for, and bold, colorful matting and stacked frames. The result is a show stopping one-of-a-kind tribute to a music legend.

That’s the beauty of custom framing; it’s designed around the artwork and the space it’s going to live in.

Creative Custom Framing Ideas

Sometimes clients come in knowing exactly what they want, and other times they just bring the piece and ask, “What do you think would look best?”

Here are a few approaches we often recommend.

Highlighting Small Items

Sometimes it’s easy for small but important items to get overlooked or even lost. Showcasing them in a shadowbox is a great way to bring deserved attention to them while preserving and protecting them for generations to come.

Mixing Modern Frames With Vintage Art

We love this combination. The contrast can make both the frame and the artwork stand out more.

Oversized Statement Pieces

A large framed artwork can completely anchor a room. We’ve helped clients turn single pieces into the focal point of their entire living space.

Textile Framing

Scarves, jerseys, fabrics, and other textiles can make incredibly unique wall displays when framed properly.

Gallery Walls

Some of our most fun projects involve helping clients design gallery walls that bring together different frames, sizes, and styles into one cohesive story.

Shadow Boxes vs Traditional Custom Framing

Both options are beautiful, it really just depends on what you’re trying to display.

A shadow box might be the better choice if:

  • Your items are three-dimensional

  • You want to display memorabilia

  • You like the idea of depth and layering

  • The goal is storytelling through objects

Custom framing might be ideal if:

  • You’re framing artwork or photographs

  • You want something that enhances your décor

  • You’re creating a gallery wall

  • The focus is more on visual design

In some of our favorite projects, we’ve even combined both ideas to create something truly one-of-a-kind.

How to Choose the Right Option

When someone brings a piece into the shop, we usually start with a few simple questions.

What are you framing?

Flat artwork typically works best in traditional frames, while objects often shine in shadow boxes.

What’s your style?

Custom framing allows us to match colors, materials, and design details to your home.

What story does the piece tell?

Some items deserve a display that highlights their meaning, not just their appearance.

How important is preservation?

Professional framing helps protect your pieces from fading, dust, and everyday wear.

Our goal is always to make sure the final piece feels just as meaningful on the wall as it did in your hands.

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s a shadow box filled with memories or a thoughtfully designed frame around a favorite piece of art, the right display can completely transform how something is experienced.

Framing isn’t just decoration, it’s a way to celebrate moments, creativity, and personal stories.

We’ve seen the smallest keepsakes become beautiful focal points once they’re given the right presentation.

If you have something meaningful tucked away that you’d love to display, custom framing or a shadow box might be the perfect way to bring it to life.
