Real Before & After Transformations Inside Our Custom Framing Studio

Not long ago, a client walked into our studio holding a piece she had owned for years.

“It’s just been sitting in a closet,” she told us. “I love it… I just never knew what to do with it.”

Moments like that are where transformation begins.

But before & after isn’t just about changing a frame. It’s about restoring meaning, preserving memories, and sometimes even rescuing what feels lost.

What “Before” Really Looks Like

When people think of “before,” they often imagine something damaged or worn out.

But most of the time, it’s much simpler than that.

The “before” is usually:

  • A meaningful piece sitting in a drawer

  • A poster in a flimsy store-bought frame

  • Artwork with faded or outdated matting

  • A family photo that never made it onto the wall

  • A diploma taped into a temporary frame

The art isn’t the problem. The presentation is.

Real Transformations, Real Stories

Every piece that comes into our studio has a story.

Here are a few before-and-after transformations that meant a great deal to the people who brought them to us.

Restoring History: Fire District Portrait Collection

This project began as a collection of severely faded portrait photographs, originally attached to a mat with handwritten names and titles.

Over time, the images had lost clarity, and the presentation made it difficult to fully appreciate the individuals represented.

Through digital restoration, each portrait was carefully revived and placed into its own custom-cut opening. Names and titles were cleanly added beneath each image, and the entire composition was thoughtfully spaced across multiple frames to improve clarity and balance.

What once felt overwhelming became a structured, readable, and meaningful tribute.

Refining the Focus: Mt. St. Helens Print

This piece originally sat in a simple, off-the-shelf frame with a basic white mat that didn’t enhance the image.

The goal was not to change the artwork, but to elevate how it was experienced.

By introducing a custom-sized archival mat in a carefully selected tone and pairing it with a more refined frame, the final presentation now draws the viewer’s eye directly to the subject.

The difference is subtle, but powerful. The artwork now feels intentional, balanced, and complete.

Preserving What Was Damaged: Water Polo Memorabilia

This project came in with significant damage. A portion of the original poster was missing, and the ribbons were wrinkled, separated, and incomplete.

The challenge was not just to frame the pieces, but to thoughtfully restore their presence.

By mounting the poster against a complementary background, the visual impact of the missing section was softened. The ribbons were carefully pressed and arranged, including one missing its original seal, to create a cohesive and visually balanced display.

The result preserves the story while presenting it in a way that feels complete again.

Restoring What Remains: Ray Atkeson Print

This piece was one of the few items to survive a devastating house fire, though it sustained significant water damage.

For the client, this wasn’t just artwork, it was a connection to what had been lost. Their request was simple: preserve it as closely as possible to the original.

Rather than replacing the frame, the original was retained. The damaged portion of the print was carefully removed, and the original design was thoughtfully recreated by cutting the lettering into the mat to reflect what had been there before.

Subtle updates to the matting allowed the piece to feel refreshed while still honoring its original form.

It wasn’t about making something new. It was about bringing something meaningful back.

What Actually Changes in a Before & After

These transformations are never just about materials or design choices.

They’re about understanding what matters to each client and preserving that through thoughtful craftsmanship.

Sometimes that means restoring damage.Sometimes it means refining presentation.

But every time, it’s about creating something that feels right when the client sees it again.

Why Before & After Matters

We’ve seen it happen time and time again:

  • A hallway becomes a gallery

  • A home office feels complete

  • A family heirloom becomes a focal point

  • A simple print becomes a conversation piece

Framing gives art presence.

It tells the piece: this matters.

Helpful Tips If You’re Considering a Framing Upgrade

If you’re looking at something in your home and wondering if it needs an upgrade, here are a few things to check:

  • Look at it from across the room, does it stand out or disappear?

  • Check the mat, is it yellowing or worn?

  • Notice glare, can you actually see the artwork clearly?

  • Consider the space, does the frame match your environment?

If you’re unsure, bring it in. We’re always happy to walk through options with you.

From “It’s Fine” to “I Love It”

One thing we’ve learned over the years:

People don’t regret framing something well.

They regret waiting.

That piece sitting in a closet?

That photo in a drawer?

That artwork in a temporary frame?

Those are all future transformations waiting to happen.

Custom framing doesn’t change the art.

It reveals it.

If you have a piece that matters to you, we’d be honored to help you preserve it.

Bring it in, and let’s explore what’s possible.
