Real Before & After Transformations Inside Our Custom Framing Studio

Not long ago, a client walked into our studio holding a print she’d owned for nearly ten years.

“It’s just been sitting in a closet,” she told us. “I love it… I just never knew what to do with it.”

When she unwrapped it, the artwork was beautiful, but it was floating inside a thin, ready-made frame that didn’t fit properly. The mat had yellowed. The glass reflected everything. It felt unfinished.

That’s the moment we love most.

Because this is where transformation begins.

Before & after isn’t just about changing a frame. It’s about changing how a piece feels, and how it lives in your space.

What “Before” Really Looks Like

When people think of “before,” they often imagine something ugly or damaged.

But most of the time, that’s not it.

The “before” is usually:

  • A meaningful piece sitting in a drawer

  • A poster in a flimsy store-bought frame

  • Artwork with faded matting

  • A family photo that never made it onto the wall

  • A diploma taped into a temporary frame

The art isn’t the problem.

The presentation is.

Many customers are surprised when they see how much the right frame changes the entire presence of a piece. It’s not about adding something flashy. It’s about creating balance, depth, and intention.

Inside One of Our Favorite Transformations

One of our favorite before and after projects was a vibrant coastal painting.

Before: It was in a thin black frame with no mat. The colors felt cramped. The glass glare made it hard to appreciate the details.

During the design consultation, we pulled a few options onto the table, warm wood tones, a soft linen mat, and a subtle inner accent.

We widened the matting to give the artwork breathing room.We selected conservation glass to reduce glare. We chose a frame that echoed the warmth of the painting’s shoreline tones.

After:The piece didn’t just look framed. It looked intentional. It looked complete.

When the client came back to pick it up, she paused for a second and just said, “Oh… wow.”

That reaction never gets old.

What Actually Changes in a Before & After

A true custom framing transformation usually involves three key upgrades:

1. Proper Proportion

Store bought frames are one size fits-all.

Custom framing is made to exact measurements. That alone changes everything. Correct spacing, balanced mat borders, and intentional sizing elevate a piece instantly.

2. Matting That Enhances, Not Distracts

We recently worked on a piece where the original bright white mat completely flattened the artwork.

By switching to a warmer, textured mat with a subtle color accent, the art suddenly felt deeper and more dimensional.

Small adjustments. Huge impact.

3. Protection That Preserves

Before & after isn’t only visual.

We use acid-free materials and UV-protective glazing to prevent yellowing and fading. Many clients don’t realize how quickly sunlight and humidity can damage artwork over time.

So part of the “after” is peace of mind.

Why Before & After Matters

A well-framed piece changes how a room feels.

We’ve seen it happen countless times:

  • A hallway becomes a gallery.

  • A home office feels finished.

  • A family heirloom becomes a focal point.

  • A simple print becomes a conversation starter.

Framing gives art presence.

It tells the piece, “You matter enough to display beautifully.”

And honestly? That message carries weight.

Helpful Tips If You’re Considering a Framing Upgrade

If you’re looking at something in your home and thinking it might need a refresh, here are a few things to consider:

Look at it from across the room. Does it command attention or fade into the wall?

Check the mat condition. Is it yellowing or warping?

Notice glare. If you can’t see the art clearly because of reflections, upgrading the glass can make a dramatic difference.

Think about the room it’s in. Does the frame complement your space, or does it feel disconnected?

And if you’re unsure, bring it in. We love walking through options together at the design table.

What Happens When You Bring a Piece to Us

When you come into our studio, we don’t rush the process.

We lay your piece out on our framing table. We pull samples. We move things around. We test combinations in natural light.

It’s collaborative. It’s thoughtful.

And it’s personal.

Every frame we design is chosen specifically for that artwork and that client.

That’s why no two projects ever look the same.

From “It’s Fine” to “I Love It”

One thing we’ve learned over the years:

People don’t regret framing something well.

They regret waiting.

That artwork sitting in the closet? That photo still in a drawer? That print in the temporary frame?

Those are all future “after” moments waiting to happen.

And once you see the transformation, you’ll never look at framing the same way again.

Before & after isn’t about making something flashy.

It’s about honoring what already matters.

Custom framing doesn’t change the art,  it reveals it.

And there is something incredibly satisfying about watching a piece go from overlooked to unforgettable.

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading a piece in your home, we’d love to help you explore the possibilities.

Bring it in. Let’s lay it out on the table together.

You might be surprised what a difference the right frame makes.
